City of Shamokin Receives State Grant for Library Improvements

(HARRISBURG) – The City of Shamokin, Northumberland County has been awarded a grant, through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) for improvements to the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library, according to Senator John R. Gordner (R-27) and Representative Kurt A. Masser (R-107).

The funds, in the amount of $127,644, will be used for the installation of automatic doors, replacement of the current HVAC system with a more efficient system and for the upgrading of facility lighting.

“I am pleased that PDE has recognized the merit in the City of Shamokin’s application,” said Senator Gordner.  “On behalf of the people of the region, I want to commend the City of Shamokin and the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library for undertaking such a significant project.”

“These funds will allow the library to make significant upgrades and allow it to be a significant part of the community for years to come,” said Representative Masser.

The funds are made available through the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund.  The Library portion is administered by PDE.  Eligible projects include ADA upgrades, new rooves and replacement windows, energy efficiency upgrades to HVAC systems, facility expansion and new construction.  A dollar-for-dollar match is required.
