Seniors Need Not Pay for Property Tax and Rent Rebate Assistance

(HARRISBURG) – – Senior citizens in Pennsylvania may have received a mailing that offers assistance in preparing 2013 Property Tax and Rent Rebate forms, but they should be aware that they do not have to pay for such assistance, according to Senator John R. Gordner (R-27).

“A group calling itself the ‘Senior Advisory Center’ with an address listed as a Harrisburg Post Office Box is mailing seniors offering to complete the forms for $39,” said Senator Gordner.  “It is important for seniors to know they do not have to pay for this service.  Any of my district offices will assist seniors with the form for free.”

Senator Gordner also noted that Area Agencies on Aging and other groups serving seniors also prepare forms at no cost.

“While the mailing from the ‘Senior Advisory Center’ is not illegal, it certainly can confuse seniors and cause them to pay for a service that is free,” said Senator Gordner.

The Property Tax and Rent Rebate program is available to those 65 years of age or older, widows or widowers who are age 50 or older, and permanently disabled adults of any age.  Income limits apply.  The program is funded through the Pennsylvania Lottery.
