Senator Gordner Obtains $600,000 Grant for Hospital

COAL TOWNSHIP – – State Senator John R. Gordner (R-27) today presented a $600,000 grant check to Shamokin Area Community Hospital to assist the facility’s upgrade of radiological imaging services.

“I am extremely impressed by the outstanding health services provided by the hospital, by the commitment of the hospital leadership and staff to continue to improve those services, and by the high level of community support for the hospital,” said Sen. Gordner.  “It is not easy to obtain grant funding at this level, but the hospital earned it.”

Senator Gordner included a line item for the grant in the state’s 2006-07 Capital Budget, and said the Budget Office recently approved the funding.

“This is a competitive process and very few items included in the Capital Budget are approved by the Budget Office,” Sen. Gordner said.  “Only the projects that demonstrate a significant community need and garner a local funding match are approved.”

Thomas R. Harlow, Shamokin Area Community Hospital’s President and Chief Executive Officer said the $2.5 million project involves expansion of the hospital’s East Wing to add a permanent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit to the hospital’s nuclear medicine suite.  The hospital has also combined its mammography and bone densitometry services into a renovated suite that will promote women’s health.

“We appreciate Senator Gordner’s support of the hospital’s efforts to continue to provide critical health services to our region,” said Mr. Harlow.  “He has proven to be a true friend of the Shamokin Area Community Hospital and our area.”
