Pennvest Board Approves Two Projects

(HARRISBURG) - - The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) today approved low cost loans to two area municipal authorities. The Berwick Area Joint Sewer Authority and Middleburg Municipal Authority had projects approved by PENNVEST, according to Senator John R. Gordner (R-27).

In Berwick, the $5.8 million project will involve separation of storm water and sewer lines to eliminate sewage overflows into the Susquehanna River during periods of high water. PENNVEST has approved a $5.3 million loan for the project. Senator Gordner assisted the Authority in a previous grant of $500,000 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for the project. The Berwick Joint Sewer Authority serves five municipalities in Columbia and Luzerne Counties.

In Middleburg, a $2.9 million project will involve continued efforts to rehabilitate the system serving the borough and Franklin Township. The Middleburg Municipal Authority today received approval for a $2.2 million loan, and previously received a $700,000 Commonwealth Financing Authority grant supported by Senator Gordner.

"Both of these projects involve continuing efforts to reduce discharges into the Susquehanna River and its tributaries, and further helps Pennsylvania comply with Chesapeake Bay requirements," said Senator Gordner. "Both require significant local and state efforts and I was pleased to be able to assist the projects."

PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance to upgrade sewer, water, storm water and drinking water projects throughout the Commonwealth.
