Senator Gordner Announces Funding for Berwick Sewer Upgrades

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) today approved loans and grants totaling more than $6.86 million to upgrade the sewer system in the Berwick area, according to state Sen. John R. Gordner (R-27).

The Berwick Area Joint Sewer Authority will use the funding to separate sanitary and storm water sewers in Berwick Borough to eliminate combined sewer discharges to the Susquehanna River during wet weather events. The Borough will receive approximately $4.57 million in grant funding and approximately $2.29 million in loan funding for the project.

The section of combined sewer to be separated is in the Berwick Industrial Development Association’s complex, which includes 20 businesses that employ 1,250 individuals. Six local companies have indicated that the sewer upgrades will allow them to create and retain jobs for area residents.

The upgrades are also expected to create an additional 110 construction jobs in the state.

"This project will have a significant effect both on our local economy and our environment," Senator Gordner said. "This project represents the most cost-effective way to ensure a safe and efficient storm water conveyance system in the Berwick community and ensure that our area can attract employers."

PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance to upgrade sewer, water, storm water and drinking water projects throughout the Commonwealth.
