Pennvest Approves Major Project in Mount Carmel

(HARRISBURG) - - The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) today approved loan funding for an important sewer project in Mount Carmel, according to State Sen. John R. Gordner (R-27), who advocated for the project.

The Mount Carmel Municipal Authority has been approved for a loan of over $4.7 million to construct new sewer interceptors and separate more than 10,000 feet of sanitary and stormwater sewage structure.  Upon completion of the project, it is expected that sewage overflow points will be eliminated, significantly reducing raw sewage bypasses into Shamokin and Butternut Creeks during periods of high water.

Because of the excellent fiscal situation of the Mount Carmel Municipal Authority, residential sewage rates are not expected to increase.  Senator Gordner said the PENNVEST loan is to be repaid over 20 years at an interest rate of one percent.

PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance to upgrade sewer, water, storm water and drinking water projects throughout the Commonwealth.  It is funded through several bond issues that were approved by voters and has approved nearly $3 billion in projects.
