Senator Gordner Receives Committee Assignments

(HARRISBURG) - - State Senator John R. Gordner (R-27) will continue to chair the Senate Labor and Industry Committee for the 2007-2008 session of the General Assembly.  Senator Gordner was appointed as the committee's chairman in July of 2006, and the assignment for the new legislative session has been announced by Senate President Pro Tempore Joseph Scarnati (R-25).

"I'm pleased to be able to continue to chair this important committee that deals with employee and employer relations, workforce development initiatives and other economic issues," said Senator Gordner.  "Last year, we were able to accomplish a major reform of the workers' compensation system, as well as important changes to the Uniform Construction Code.  During the coming session, I plan to place major emphasis on workforce development issues so that we can continue to work with businesses and industries to continue to create family sustaining jobs."

Senator Gordner also sought and received an appointment to the Senate Appropriations Committee, which will begin a series of hearings next month on the proposed state budget for 2007-2008.

"The Appropriations Committee is among the most important committees in the General Assembly," said Senator Gordner.  "In addition to the budget hearings, virtually every bill that requires state spending moves through the committee, so it represents an excellent opportunity for me to have an impact on legislation that could benefit our area."

Senator Gordner was also elevated to Vice-Chairman of the Communications and Technology Committee, where he served as a member in the last session.

"Cable television competition was a major topic addressed by the committee last session that will carry over to the current session," said Senator Gordner.  "Additionally, one of the prime areas for economic development in Pennsylvania is in the technology industry and this committee can have an important impact in that area."

Senator Gordner will also continue to serve on the Community and Economic Development, Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, and Judiciary Committees during the 2007-2008 session.
