(HARRISBURG) – The Mount Carmel Area School District has been awarded a $250,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to assist in the renovation of its indoor pool, according to Senator John R. Gordner (R-27).
The indoor pool facility was first opened in 1977, as part of the new Junior-Senior High School building. Currently, the pool’s HVAC system is worn out and in need of replacement in order to allow usage to continue for students and local residents. The funds obtained through the grant will be used to replace and upgrade the PoolPAK unit, which controls HVAC and dehumidification of the pool area, and to cover related supplies.
“When I first learned about this project, it was apparent that something needed to happen in order to keep the pool from being closed down indefinitely,” said Senator Gordner. “I immediately sought out potential funding from PDE in order to keep the pool open.”
The new PoolPAK unit will allow daily swimming lessons for K-12 students to continue as part of the school’s physical education curriculum. The pool is also utilized after hours by the local elementary and junior high swimming program, as well as the varsity and junior varsity swim teams. Further, this is a community pool and is often rented by local residents for parties and other swim events.
“It is a true community gathering place,” added Senator Gordner. “These pool upgrades will benefit not only the students of Mount Carmel Area School district, but it will also allow the pool to continue to be an asset to the entire community.”
“On behalf of the students, staff, administration, board of directors, and residents of the Mount Carmel Area School District, we would like to thank Senator John Gordner and his staff for their efforts in securing $250,000 in funding to help renovate the swimming pool located at our Jr.-Sr. High School,” said Mount Carmel Superintendent Bernard Stellar. “Senator Gordner was instrumental in helping us with this endeavor, and his support for our school district over the years has been outstanding. We are certain that these funds will help keep our pool open and in great working condition for the foreseeable future. Thank you Senator Gordner!”
Representative Kurt A. Masser (R-107) has also been supportive of the project throughout the process.
